Living in Newark

The city of Newark is New Jersey’s gem in the rough. Despite its reputation for being a rough city to live in, Newark has a lot going for it and has seen quite a turnaround in recent years. Just a few miles away from Manhattan, NY, this ethnically diverse city is the largest in the state, as well as a major player in the fields of transportation and industry.

Newark Skyline

Located in the heart of New Jersey’s Gateway Region, Newark serves an important hub for the nation’s air, shipping and rail ways. Thanks to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean via the Newark Bay, the Gateway City has grown to one of the largest shipping facilities in the New York metropolitan area. Facilities like the Newark Liberty International Airport keep the Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal one of the busiest in the world.

Other businesses with headquarters in the city, such as Prudential Financial and IDT Corporation to name a few, keep the area’s economy steady and strong. These service industries have rapidly been replacing Brick City’s factory rows in the Ironbound ward’s famous Industrial Meadowlands, although many of the abandoned buildings still stand.

Whether you are moving to Newark for its prime location to New York, its considerable economy or to attend one of its fine universities (like the University of Medicine and Dentistry New Jersey or the Seton Hall University School of Law), or you are simply visiting, you’ll find there is plenty to keep you occupied during your free time.

Explore the city’s five wards, which range from bustling urban centers brimming with historical architecture and cultural venues to quiet suburban communities with plenty of shopping opportunities. No matter where you travel in the city, you’re sure to find some form of entertainment.
